I overheard a conversation about K-pop earlier today, so I decided to revisit some of my favorite Girls' Generation tracks. (OK. Obviously this happened on the internet. So when I say "overheard a conversation" I actually mean "read an email chain.") So to me, it had to be either "Oh!" or "Gee." And you know what? "Gee" it is. On the strength of the video alone.
So then a friend of mine started yapping at me about J-pop. (Obviously online too. So by "yapping at me" I mean "posting on my Facebook wall.") Specifically, Perfume. And I mean. Yo. This song is incredible. I've played it at least twelve times in the past hour. Literally not exaggerating, not even one bit. So good.
Coldplay's new single "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall." Eh, whatever. Right? But the Swedish House Mafia remix. Boom! Right? And a week or so ago Avicii posted up a preview of his remix. A little less boom, a little more whoosh. You know? No worries. Still plenty of boom.
In other news, Canblaster. Literally never not making bangers. It's gotten boring. Like there's never the excitement. Like, "Is this gonna be a banger?" That element of surprise is entirely gone. Like, "Oh, another banger. Should've seen that coming." Friggin' banger.
The new video for Gesaffelstein's "OPR." Shot at Le Bain, right? I can't really tell. Vimeo says it was shot at The Standard. Where Le Bain is. And it's in a big room. Which Le Bain is. But I can't identify Le Bain without seeing a hottub. Serial. This thing could've been shot in a hotel room with CDJs for all I know. Hottub or bust.
Also. Laberge has a new track out. It's big. It's epic. It's foxy. I'm all sorts of excited to play it on both Friday and Saturday. And it's a free download! The gods have smiled favorably upon us on this rainy day. (It's rainy in New York. It may or may not be rainy where you're at. I'll assume it is.)
Y'all know Expendable Youth, right? You probably do. You definitely should. They're the kings of the banger. From both this era and eras past. For example. The kid Matt posting up Level 42's "Something About You" on Facebook. And me being all, "Gracious me, you're so right! How did I ever forget?" Yea. This song rules.
Also. My dude DJ Pazel is in the running for DJ of the year in the BizBash Reader's Choice Awards. He's playing it all cool like, "Yo, I don't even care if I win, you know? I mean, whatever, you know?" But it's very clear he wants to win. He needs to win. He craves that W. So yo. Do me a favor and vote for him here, yea? And while you're at it, check out his live mix from Greenhouse. From 2009. (Ayo Paz, step up your SoundCloud game.) I'll owe you one.
OK. So Korallreven is one of those duos that I'm reading about all the time. But the second I try to talk about 'em IRL, I'm all, "Eh, err, I dunno what they're called?" Because. I mean. I could spell their name all day, but actually pronounce it? No. Let's not front like I've ever actually spoken about music with another human IRL. Ever. All internet everything.
Anyways, their new single "As Young As Yesterday" just dropped on Acéphale. You can download the original over at Pitchfork. Also. Girl Unit. Did a remix, it's awesome, and it's available to download from Acéphale's SoundCloud page. God bless Acéphale.
Guys. Oh my goodness, guys. So I'm sure I'm late to the game here. I'm sure you've all thought of this before. But yo. My world has been forever changed. In the cab home from my gig last night. Friend playing "How Deep Is Your Love" on his fancy little iPhone. And Luke Jenner's all, "Let me hear that song!" And all I can hear is, "Let me see that thong!" And I mean. Yo. I'm not mad.
EDIT:RAC just hit ten thousand Facebook fans, so André Allen Anjos made his Smashing Pumpkins cover available for download. Vocals by his wife. How dreamy. Check it:
There once was a time when ex-Panda Bro Dan Kagan and I would spend hours on end watching the Part of the Weekend Never Dies trailer on repeat. Naturally, we rinsed "Theme From Discotheque" all too regularly during that period of time. Yet we had no idea that there was a video for the track. And that it was (and is, and forever will be) totally radical.
Wow. So I started writing this blog post. And at the time I wasn't entirely sure whether or not I was feeling the new Rihanna single produced by Calvin Harris. I was writing about some other song. Whatever. I don't even remember what it was. Because I was listening to "We Found Love" while I wrote. I have no blogging integrity, deal with it.
So yea. Anyways. By the time I was done writing that post, I'd listened to this here tune four or so times in a row. And I realized that I'm obsessed with it. OMGeez. So I wrote about it instead. Even my cat's fist-pumping, and he can only be bothered to be awake for like two hours per (see: purr) day. So for him to exert the energy necessary to stand on his hind legs and fist-pump? Yea, we've got a banger on our hands (see: paws).
OK. Terius Nash AKA The-Dream. Made a bunch of awesome songs. Like this one. And this one. And blah, blah, blah. Wrote a whole boatload of hit songs for a lot of big stars (which I'm too lazy to link to). Released an LP for free. Etc.
Anyways, the first video from the aforementioned free LP is here. The song's awesome. The video's grand as well. Dude is rocking outfits on outfits on outfits. I just wish someone would tell him not to wear a fedora. Or bowler. Or whatever that fancy hat he's sporting is called. (What are those called? I'm "unsophisticated" and "an idiot.")
Also. How ill is this track? Shouts to The Escape Club for being so darned awesome. And this video? Oh my goodness, are you kidding me? It's phenomenal!
OK. So this blog is first and foremost about making myself look cool. So with that in mind, think about the fact that I haven't yet posted my latest mix. Weird, right? Yea, I'm forgetful. But alas, here it is. My good pal NSR and I sat down one afternoon. Made a crate. Tweaked it. Mapped out a track list. And recorded the mix the next afternoon in one take. It may not be the best thing you've ever heard, but it's certainly the best thing I've ever heard.
Speaking of 101 Management. Scott Melker. Easily one of the best DJs I've ever met. Easily the best DJ that likes me enough to give me high fives on the regular. Anyways. Much like the kid Turbz (see: yesterday), Scott makes mad edits. Mash-ups. Moombahpop. Etc. You can find the vast majority of them here. But yo. Most recently it's the "Sex on Fire" v. Gucci joint. And it's fire, and it's blowing up the internet. Give it a whirl:
(Pictured: DJ Ian Boyd, who is neither NSR nor Scott Melker. But his picture comes up when you run a Google image search for "Scott Melker," so why not?)
So dubstep really isn't my thing. Like some of it's crazy good, but usually it just makes me feel super soft. And old. Like super, super soft and old. So when my dude Turbz hit me up all, "Yo, I made a dubstep mash-up," all I could really think was, "Bummer." But then he's all, "Katy Perry, dogs." And I'm all, "Yes!" And. Duh. It's great.
Now why I ever doubted that this mash-up would be anything less than stellar? Yea, that's a whole different question. I mean, Turbz is kinda like the king of edits. Seriously. Look at this SoundCloud page. Err, these nine SoundCloud pages. Like his "Steal My Sunshine" edit? Yo, it's a beast. And his "Home" edit? I play it out quite literally every single Saturday night. I could play an entire set of nothing but Turbz joints. That's how many of his edits I have. No joke.
So I'm just sitting here in bed. With my retainer. Slurring my speech. Like a nerd. And I'm like, "Eh, I guess I should blog something today." But then I'm all, "What do the kids wanna hear?" And I'm like, "Probably that Mannie Fresh mix that DJ Ayres just released." But it's like, "That's kind of old so far as the internet goes, right?" Don't care. This is stupendous:
Guys and gals. I'm literally so hungry right now. Like so, so hungry. I haven't thought about anything other than bacon cheeseburgers since I woke up this morning. Naturally, I'm too lazy to get out of bed to get one. What should I do? Your advice would be much appreciated.
Anyways, Cobra Starship. OK, well first of all. Gabe Saporta from Midtown? Really? Ill. I support that 200%. Also. "You Make Me Feel..." Great tune. Also gets huge support. And Sabi? I think I did a post about her, right? Yea, I did. Anyways, she rules. And this song rules. God, I'm so obsessed with Top 40
Dudes. Life can be such a struggle, no? Today, for example. I was forced to sleep in late, pet my cat, dork around on my 1200s, pet my cat some more, and nap OD. Like seriously? Why do I have to have it so hard? Ugh. I guess I'm gonna go eat some more pizza or something until I'm happy.
Anyways, apparently my dear friend Robbie Loggia is actually mad nice at that whole production thing. Like I had no idea. Then I hit up his SoundCloud and was all, "Word dogs? It's like that?" Totally blown away. Peep two of his funkier offerings:
OMGigamesh, how I love your tunes. I mean, your remixes? Those alone won my heart quite some time ago. Then you went out and put together a fabulous little EP just for me. God. You're definitely my best friend. "Inspired by a girl the producer had been pursuing for about three years, 'When You’re Dancing' nods to the funky house of Basement Jaxx and swirling, atmospheric buildups of classic acid house." Yeesh, now that's something I can relate to. Or at least the girl part. Y'all can stream the EP sampler below and chirp at the RAC remix in full over at MTV.
Anyways. Tonight. I'm DJing at Sway at Spring and Greenwich. It's a '90s party, and it will be the ultimate awesomeness. No cover, open bar from 10:30-11:30. Peep all the details here.
I'm DJing a party in the basement of LPR with the Pants Dance crew on Friday night. Umma be rocking with Softwar, Flora Yin-Wong, and Greenie. So I'm not trying to brag or anything, but yea. This is gonna be pretty LVLz. Anywho, I was perusing the Pants Dance blog last night when I ran across Fare Soldi's remix of Nu Shooz's "I Can't Wait." Um, yea. Banger and a half. Catch me dropping this every night forever and always.
Speaking of Australia. Beni. New single with Mattie Safer available to stream. New album coming out on Modular in October. And "It's a Bubble" and all of it's remixes still killing the game. Beni's doing it so right, no?
OMG. Telephoned. OMG, OMG. DJed with Maggie once, opened for Maggie and Sammy a few weeks later. And I'll be darned if they aren't some of the nicest gosh darned people on the face of the earth. Real talk. And they're really gosh darned good at making music. And they just released a new mix, hooray! Covers. Or remixes. Or whatever these are called. "Dynamite." "Super Bass." But you know what? The "Crave You" one just might take the cake. Let's go!
When did I first fall in love with Surkin? What was the track that got me hooked? "White Knight Two"? The "Next of Kin" remix? Or even the "DVNO" remix? Christ, I have no idea. All I know is that somewhere along the way I became obsessed. Helped my boy make a video for the kid's remix of "One Day." Etc.
Well now he's on that Marble Players tip, which obviously rules because everything they touch turns to gold. Or already was gold. Or something. Anyways, Surkin's new release. Pure gold as well. Both mixes of "Orbital Motorway" are good, but "Ultra Light" is obviously the one. The track makes me wanna go to a club. Completely obliterated. Alone. And dance. The dance must be a cross between a fist pump and the thizz face. While shuffling back and forth awkwardly but decidedly. This must happen. God bless this song.
OK. So there's Jerome of LOL Boys. And there's Samo Sound Boy. Both phenomenal producers. Both have impeccable taste. And now they're co-founders of their very own record label, Body High. What's more, the two will be producing together under the moniker DJ Dodger Stadium. They're releasing their Stadium Status EP through that there label on October 4th. It's a five track EP, and all five tracks are complete and utter bangers. None are available for me to internet at you just yet, so check out the duo's "Marvin's Room" edit in the meantime. Needless to say, it bangs as well.
Half a year or so ago. My old friend Mikey Rodge hits me up all, "Blah, blah, yo, you know any NYC kids that would wanna DJ one my SXSW parties?" And I'm all, "Blah, blah, yea, lemme ask around." So I hit up the dude Free Magic and he's all, "Blah, blah, absolutely, this is a go. But blah, blah, blah, would you be keen on having my boy Bit Funk spin as well?" And Mikey and I were all, "Blah, blah, hell yes, let's do the gosh darned thing!"
Anyways. I've been a big fan of Bit Funk's work ever since. I mean I was most certainly a fan before. But now? Now things have quite simply spiraled out of control. Fan boy status. Etc. And the gent just released yet another quality track. And this time? This time it's available as a free download. Things could certainly be worse. Oh. And did I even mention that the song's a total banger? All foxy and funky and fun and etc. Played it last Saturday. Played it Wednesday. Played it Thursday. And again at my second Thursday gig. So necessary. Go to Bit Funk's SoundCloud page to download the track for free through MediaFire.
On an entirely different note. Bird Peterson. I opened for the dude up at Dartmouth a couple of years ago. And honestly? He's kind of legendary. Not that I didn't expect it. I mean his production? So ticey. That Ocelot remix? Those Wu-Tang remixes? All of the old B-More remixes? God, yes please. But yo, I didn't realize just how hard dude went in on his sets until I saw him DJ for the first time that night. Um, yea. Anywho, peep Drankenstein 2 below. It's kind of LVLz.
I've made it abundantly clear that I very much dig The Magician. Dude is like awesome times a zillion. And Lykke Li. Super cool, super adorable, super duper. And their powers combined? Uh, duh. Swag on one hundred thousand trillion.
DJed a Fashion's Night Out event at Swarovski last night. Played the former's remix of the latter's "I Follow Rivers." Three girls came up to the booth and sang it word-for-word with me. It was magical. Then dipped down to Tammany Hall to close out Popshop 009. The lineup was absolutely unreal. I showed up as The Knocks were wrapping up their live set and Ellie Goulding and Starsmith were getting ready to hop on the decks. Fin dropped the aforementioned track. I creeped up to the booth and sang it word-for-word to him. It was infinitely less cute than what had happened during the same song just two hours earlier. Why am I so unattractive? Does this blog make me look fat?
Um. Oliver. The dudes are kind of killing the game, right? Right. And their remix for Sneaky Sound System is no different. Epic, sexy, and borderline overwhelming. Swag me out, catty. Shouts to Gotta Dance Dirty for the track.
Plus the Moullinex remix of Kamp!. Quieter, tamer, equally sexy. But can we talk for a second about SoundCloud comments? I mean, yea. It's great that wonderful songs like these are getting OD love all over the internet. But like. When I can't skim through a track because comments keep popping up on the player? Like seriously? Get outta here with that noise, SoundCloud! Yeesh. Spectacular remix, though.
And oh my word. Dirty South Joe's Me, Myself & Irene mix for Fingers On Blast. I dunno. I have no words. Every mix this dude does is pure genius. So versatile, so knowledgable. Blah, blah, blah.
God, I miss Justice so much. The first time I heard their "Never Be Alone" remix? The first time I heard "D.A.N.C.E."? The first time I heard †? All religious experiences. ("Civilization" wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but still.) But now Audio, Video, Disco is so, so close. And the title track - "Audio, Video, Disco," duh - is here. Sexy and sleek, yet tough. And the video ain't have bad either.
And once again. This track right here. What version of "Tthhee Ppaarrttyy" is this and where can I find it? I've been searching tirelessly for this tune for years on years on years.
Aight. So I really love house. And disco. And pop. And hip-hop. Etc. But honestly? Like seriously? I don't think I've enjoyed playing out anything other than New Wave for the past two or three weeks. Dunno why. So for starters, The Human League. I guess "Don't You Want Me" is the obvious choice here, but you know what? I'm not an obvious guy. I'm unpredictable, unbridled. And most importantly, unreliable. (Also, pretty sure that's an entirely inappropriate use of the word "unbridled," no?) So yea. "(Keep Feeling) Fascination" it is! Boom!
Oh. And Depeche Mode. First of all, "Just Can't Get Enough" is my favorite song of theirs. So that's a good reason to post it up. And there's a cat on one version of the album art. Two good reasons to post this cut. Need I say more?
Guys. OMG, guys. The Magician. Am I right? God, he's so awesome. No? Anywho, Kitsuné is releasing the kid's debut solo release on October 3rd. And. Well. It's superb. Remember that guy Jeppe that sang on Classixx's "I'll Get You"? Yea, he's on the track. So ill.
And since we're already rapping about Kitsuné. Mark Ronson & The Business Intl. New song "Record Collection"? So ill. CSS remix? Seriously, chill out. Like yo. Too good, too fun. No joke, I've had the cut on repeat for something like three hours now. While I watch Pawn Stars in bed with my cat, of course. Seriously though, the track's insane. Seriously. I'm being serious, guys.
